Boxing News 2014: Miguel Cotto Looking For Best Option; Oscar De La Hoya Believes Puerto Rican Should Face Canelo Alvarez

| By

Miguel Cotto said in a boxing news 2014 update that they are considering all options for his next fight, but Oscar De La Hoya believes that the Puerto Rican champion has no other choice but to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Cotto, the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion, said in a recent interview that he can't talk about his next opponent yet because they are still looking for the best possible option at this point.

"I can't predict my destiny but considering what's happening right now me and my team will take the best available option," Cotto said via Tha Boxing Voice. "We are relaxed and resting waiting for the best moment to settle that fight."

Cotto, who defeated Sergio Martinez in their world middleweight title fight in June, is being linked to former light middleweight champion, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who has expressed interest in facing the Caguas, Puerto Rico native in recent boxing news 2014 update.

Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya said in an interview with BoxingScene that Cotto has no other choice but to face Canelo if he wants to get a big-money fight next year.

De La Hoya pointed out that most fight fans are now more interested in a Cotto-Canelo showdown because the possible super showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is not close to happening based on what the reigning pound-for-pound said about the bout.

"What I feel, and I think what's happening now is people are starting to talk not about Pacquiao-Mayweather," De La Hoya said in a boxing news 2014 update. "They're now starting to talk about Cotto-Canelo. It's not the second-best fight to be made. Now it's becoming the best fight to be made. So something's happening."

If the two camps decide to finalize the fight, Cotto and Alvarez will likely collide on Cinco De Mayo weekend on May 2 as De La Hoya previously insisted that Canelo wants to take the fight date from Mayweather.

Aside from Alvarez, Cotto's camp will also reportedly consider defending the WBC middleweight champion against Gennady Golovkin if the 32-year-old Kazakh manages to defend WBA and IBF middleweight titles against Marco Antonio Rubio on Saturday.
