Saul "Canelo" Alvarez suffered a setback after sustaining a left ankle injury, but his camp said in a boxing news 2015 update that they are expecting big things for the former world champion.
Madison Reynoso, Canelo's manager, said in an interview with BoxingScene that they wanted to have another fight before the end of the year to prepare for big fights in 2015, but they don't want to put Alvarez in a risky situation.
But despite calling off their planned tune-up fight in December, Reynoso reiterated that their plan remains the same - they want a big-money fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend on May 2 next year, possibly against reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.
"Unfortunately this injury happened and we didn't want Saul to take the risk," Reynoso said in a boxing news 2015 update. "This does not change our plans, which is going for that big fight in May 2015. Obviously everyone knows about Cotto, but we are a big name. We simply want a big fight. This is what the team and Canelo is looking for."
Recent reports indicated that catchweight and fight location could be an issue for the proposed Alvarez-Cotto showdown, but Reynoso is confident that the two camps will reach a common ground.
"We leave these things to the rest of the team. I don't know if the negotiations will be easy, but there is little concern for is if it is in New York, in Texas or in Las Vegas, and there is little concern about the weight. We want this big fight for May," Reynoso stressed.
Alvarez, who defeated Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo in his last two fights, was supposed to fight on December 6 against Joshua Clottey, but doctors required him to rest for the next six weeks due to a recurring left ankle injury.
Clottey expressed frustration over the cancelation of the fight, saying that he wanted to face Alvarez to erase the bitter memory of his loss to Manny Pacquiao, which has hurt his boxing stock over the past several years.
The 37-year-old Accra, Ghana native said in a boxing news 2015 interview that he is still hoping that the fight will push through in early January next year.
"I know injuries happen. I hope Canelo heals up and we can fight at the end of January. We both agreed to fight and signed contracts. He should fight me when he's healthy," Clottey told BoxingScene.
