Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of Great Value brand apple juice due to potentially dangerous levels of inorganic arsenic. The recall affects 9,535 cases of apple juice sold in 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an urgent warning about the recall on Friday, August 23, emphasizing that while the juice may cause temporary health issues, it is unlikely to lead to severe or lasting health problems.
Walmart Recalls Apple Juice Over Arsenic Contamination
The recall, originally announced on August 15, was prompted after Florida-based Refresco Beverages US Inc., the manufacturer of the juice, found inorganic arsenic levels in the juice that exceeded industry standards.
According to AP News, the product being recalled is the six-pack of 8-ounce (227-gram) bottles of Great Value apple juice. Walmart has removed the affected juice from its shelves and is working with Refresco to investigate the issue.
Molly Blakeman, a spokesperson for Walmart, stated, "The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. We have removed this product from our impacted stores and are working with the supplier to investigate."
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can be found in both organic and inorganic forms. According to the FDA, inorganic arsenic is more toxic than organic arsenic. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) explains that many foods contain trace amounts of both forms of arsenic.
However, slightly higher levels of inorganic arsenic can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, numbness, and muscle cramping.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies inorganic arsenic as a carcinogen, meaning it has the potential to cause cancer.
Long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic can lead to serious health problems, including skin disorders, cancers of the skin, bladder, and lungs, as well as cardiovascular disease. Short-term exposure may cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and numbness in the hands and feet.
Consumers Urged to Check Great Value Apple Juice for Potential Refunds
Despite the presence of inorganic arsenic in the recalled apple juice, the FDA has not received any reports of illnesses related to the product. The FDA reassures consumers that the levels of arsenic found in the recalled juice are not expected to cause significant health issues.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also recognizes inorganic arsenic as a carcinogen. According to WHO, inorganic arsenic compounds are commonly found in drinking water and are highly toxic, whereas organic arsenic compounds, often found in seafood, are less harmful.
According to USA Today, the recall applies to Great Value apple juice with a "best if used by" date of December 28, 2024. Consumers who have purchased the recalled juice are advised to return it to the store for a refund or dispose of it safely. Walmart and Refresco are taking steps to ensure that no more contaminated juice reaches consumers.
As of now, neither Walmart nor Refresco has received any reports of health issues from consumers. The FDA continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed. Walmart urges customers to remain cautious and check their products to ensure they are not affected by the recall.
For further information, customers can contact Walmart or check the FDA's website for updates on the recall and safety recommendations.
