Ben & Jerry's unveiled their newest ice cream flavor that pays tribute to the NBC show Saturday Night Live classic acts Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd.
The ice cream flavor name Two Wild and Crazy Pies is based on Martin and Aykroyd's SNL sketch Two Wild and Crazy Guys that first aired in 1977. It's about two Czechoslovakian brothers Yoruk and Georg Festruck who try to adapt to their new surroundings.
Coconut cream pie ice cream combined with chocolate cream pie ice cream mixed with chocolate cookie swirl make up the ice cream flavor. Huffington Post said it might be the flavor from the brand, and can be the most popular if it'll only be distributed in local grocers. The flavor is only available in Scoop Shops for a limited time period from September 24 onward.
Ben & Jerry's celebrates the show's 40th season with four thematic flavors, the last one to be released early 2015. Two Wild and Crazy Pies is the third SNL-inspired flavor, following the first two flavors released earlier this year.
"We were torn between this and the Bass-o-Matic, so it was obvious which lent itself to a better flavor," said Scoop Shop brand manager, Alison Gilbert. The first two released flavors paid tribute to more recent SNL skits, but the latest one refers to a classic.
The first released SNL flavor was Gilly's Catastrophic Crunch that refers to the adventures of Gilly. It's a chocolate and sweet cream ice cream mixed with caramel clusters, marshmallow swirl, and fudge-covered almonds. Lazy Sunday is the second SNL-themed ice cream with vanilla cake batter mixed with chocolate and yellow cupcake chunks and chocolate frosting swirl.
Saturday Night Live started airing in NBC on October 11, 1975, originally called NBC's Saturday Night. It reached its 40th season and currently has a total of 768 aired episodes.
