Telecommunications giant Samsung continues to pay Microsoft $1 billion annually for rights to the software company's operating system technology, PC World reports.
"By virtue of the Android licensing program, approximately 80 percent of the Android-based smartphones sold in the U.S. are licensed to use Microsoft's patents," Microsoft says in a court complaint, according to the site.
Microsoft allegedly brought Samsung to court in August over a 2011 agreement holding Samsung accountable for paying Microsoft that amount for seven years in order to employ its technology--the latter company has made late payments and still owes interest.
"Samsung has suggested that Microsoft has breached the business collaboration agreement," David Howard, Microsoft's deputy general counsel, said today in a blog post, Business Week reports.
"We disagree, and that's why we asked the court to rule that Microsoft is not in breach."
Moving forward, Microsoft is seeing to get reimbursed for $6.9 million and a court agreement holding its consolidation of Nokia does not affect its previously agreed-upon contract.
Samsung representatives have not publicly commented on the court case or the $1 billion annual investments.
