The recall of apple juice has expanded across the US after high levels of inorganic arsenic were found. Walmart and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this recall.
The recall began with about 10,000 cases of Great Value apple juice sold by Walmart. It has now grown to include more than 133,500 cases from various brands made by Refresco Beverages. This juice was sold in many places, including Puerto Rico and Washington, DC.
Grocery Stores Recall Apple Juice Across US
Walmart said they are working with the juice supplier to solve the problem and have already removed the affected products from their stores. The recall includes Great Value apple juice sold in six-packs of 8-ounce plastic and 96-ounce bottles. This juice was available in over 2,000 Walmart stores across 25 states.
Aldi has also recalled its Nature's Nectar 100% Apple Juice. This juice comes in 64-ounce plastic bottles and was sold in 16 states like Alabama, Florida, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Aldi asks customers to throw away the juice or return it for a refund.
According to CBS News, other stores affected by the recall include BJs, Market Basket, Walgreens, and Weis Markets. They also sold apple juice from Refresco Beverages, which is now being removed due to the high levels of inorganic arsenic.
In Wisconsin, two brands of apple juice under recall are Nice! 100% Apple Juice from Walgreens and Nature's Nectar 100% Apple Juice from Aldi. Both are 64-ounce bottles with expiration dates in March 2025, according to USA Today.
What Is Inorganic Arsenic?
The recall is due to inorganic arsenic, a harmful substance that can cause serious health problems. There are two types of arsenic: organic and inorganic. Organic arsenic, found in seafood, is usually safe. Inorganic arsenic is poisonous and can be found in contaminated water and some foods.
Long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic can lead to cancer, including skin, bladder, and lung cancer. It can also cause heart disease and other severe health issues. Short-term exposure may cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and a burning or tingling feeling in the hands and feet.
The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies inorganic arsenic as a carcinogen, meaning it can cause cancer.
The FDA is monitoring the situation and working with companies to remove harmful products from stores. If you have bought any recalled apple juice, check the labels and return the products to the store for a refund.
If you have consumed the recalled juice and feel unwell, seek medical advice. The FDA will provide updates as they learn more about the issue. Stay informed and act if you suspect you have bought any affected apple juice.
