BMW is recalling 720,796 vehicles in North America due to a safety concern involving the water pump's electrical connector.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that the connector might not be properly sealed, which could lead to water exposure and a short circuit. This issue poses a rare but serious risk of fire.

Affected BMW Models

According to Reuters, the recall affects several BMW models, including the X1, X3, and X5, along with certain 5-series sedans and other vehicles. The defect is due to insufficient sealing of the water pump and its plug connector. Over time, fluid from the vehicle's positive crankcase ventilation system can drip onto the electrical connector, potentially causing an electrical short circuit.

BMW will inspect and, if necessary, replace the water pump and plug connector free of charge. Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to divert any potential fluid away from the connector. Owners will be notified by mail starting October 4, and they are encouraged to visit an authorized BMW service center for the repairs.

Recent Recall Follows Issues with Overheating Starter Motors, Faulty Airbags

To date, BMW has received about 18 customer complaints related to this issue, but there have been no reported accidents or injuries. This recall is part of BMW's ongoing efforts to address vehicle safety issues. It follows a recent recall involving nearly 105,000 vehicles due to a problem with overheating starter motors and another for faulty airbag inflators.

According to CBS News, this marks the third recall from the German automaker since July. On July 24, BMW issued a recall affecting more than 290,000 vehicles in North America due to a potential issue with faulty bolts. This issue could result in the interior cargo rail detaching in the event of a rear crash.

Just weeks ago, BMW had to recall almost 105,558 crossovers and sedans in the US due to concerns about the starter motor overheating.

For more information or assistance, BMW owners can contact customer service at 1-800-525-7417. The recall is identified by the number "24V-608." Additional details are available on the NHTSA's website or by calling their safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
