Perdue Foods is recalling more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets and tenders after customers reported finding metal wire in the products.

The recall, which was announced by Perdue and the U.S. Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), affects specific lots of three different chicken products.

Perdue Foods Issues Recall

These include Perdue Breaded Chicken Tenders, Butcher Box Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets, and Perdue Simply Smart Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets.

The recall was prompted by customer complaints about metal wire in the chicken products. After investigating, Perdue and FSIS identified approximately 167,171 pounds of affected products.

Perdue, located in Maryland, has taken swift action to remove these products from store shelves and issued a public notice to inform consumers about the potential danger.

In a statement, Jeff Shaw, Perdue's senior vice president of food safety and quality, explained that the company discovered a thin strand of metal wire during its manufacturing process. Although the wire was found in only a small number of packages, Perdue decided to recall all potentially affected products as a precautionary measure. Shaw emphasized that the safety and well-being of their customers are the company's top priorities.

At this time, there have been no reports of injuries or adverse reactions related to the consumption of these products. However, FSIS has raised concerns that some of the recalled chicken might still be in consumers' freezers. They urge consumers to check their freezers and take action if they have purchased any of the recalled products.

According to AP News, the affected products can be identified by specific details on their packaging. All recalled products bear the establishment number "P-33944" and have a "best if used by" date of March 23, 2025. The products were distributed nationwide and were sold at various retail locations. They may also have been purchased online.

Consumers Urged to Check Freezers, Seek Refunds

Customers who have purchased any of the recalled chicken products are advised not to consume them. Instead, they should either dispose of the products or return them to the store where they were purchased.

Perdue is offering full refunds to anyone who has bought the recalled items. Consumers can contact Perdue Foods directly at 866-866-3703 to initiate the refund process.

Just last year, Tyson Foods had to recall about 30,000 pounds of chicken nuggets due to reports of metal pieces found in the products. In addition to metal, other materials such as plastic fragments, rocks, and even bits of insects have led to food recalls in the past.

The U.S.  Department of Agriculture's FSIS is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that all affected products are removed from the market. The agency has stressed the importance of consumer awareness in preventing potential health risks. They also remind consumers to stay informed about food recalls and to report any issues they encounter with food products.

For more information about the recall, including a list of the specific products involved, consumers can visit the Perdue Foods or FSIS websites. Both sites provide detailed information on the recall, including product codes and instructions on how to handle the affected items.

As a final reminder, if you have any of the recalled chicken products in your home, do not eat them. Instead, follow the instructions provided by Perdue Foods and FSIS to ensure your safety and the safety of your family.
