Fazoli'z Italian Restaurant, a beloved small-town spot, has abruptly closed its Indiana location. With over 200 locations nationwide, this closure follows another recent one in the area.

The restaurant has served the community for years, but now customers are met with a sign directing them to other locations.

Fazoli'z Shuts Down Elkhart Location

Diners in Elkhart, about 15 miles east of South Bend, were surprised when the local Fazoli'z suddenly closed its doors, according to local CBS affiliate WSBT.

The closure was marked by the removal of signs and a notice on the doors indicating it was permanent. Customers were directed to visit the nearby Mishawaka location for their Fazoli'z meals. The South Bend location had also closed three years ago.

Fazoli'z, known for its Italian-American fast-casual dining, was popular among locals for its quick and affordable pasta dishes. The initial announcement did not detail the reasons for the Elkhart closure.

Elkhart residents are seeking answers after the sudden shutdown of the local Fazoli's Italian Restaurant, a fixture in the community for years. The abrupt closure came without prior notice, leaving former patrons and employees surprised and nostalgic.

Discussions on Reddit reveal a mixture of confusion and memories shared by the community. One recent visitor mentioned receiving extra breadsticks just days before the closure, highlighting the unexpected nature of the event.

Another former employee reflected on the busy days of the early 2000s when the restaurant was a bustling hub of activity.

Residents recall the restaurant fondly, with one sharing memories of family meals there before church and another lamenting the loss, noting that the restaurant was often a topic of conversation during family visits.

The reason for the closure was financial underperformance, which, according to a friend of a former employee, did not justify keeping the establishment open.

This has sparked further discussion about the decline of the shopping center where it was located, now described as a "ghost town."

As the community reflects on the closure, many are left with fond memories of a once-popular local dining spot that served as a backdrop to many family gatherings and teenage jobs.

According to The U.S. Sun, Fazoli's, established in 1988, quickly became a staple of fast casual dining with Italian-American dishes. Headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, the chain now operates 211 locations across the U.S. as of September 2023.

Founded by Kunihide Toyoda, Fazoli's initially grew from one location to five in the Lexington area, offering affordable meals. Its success led to its acquisition by Duskin Co. Ltd., which formed the Seed Restaurant Group and further expanded the chain.

During the 1990s, Fazoli's rapidly expanded across Kentucky, Indiana, and Florida. By 1992, it had grown to 35 restaurants, with each generating significant revenue and supporting further expansion.

2006, Sun Capital Partners acquired Fazoli's, marking a new phase with Robert Weissmueller as CEO. Strategic shifts and leadership changes were implemented to stabilize the brand despite declining sales and store closures.

In July 2015, Sentinel Capital Partners acquired Fazoli's and committed to revitalizing its presence. The latest transition occurred in November 2021 when FAT Brands Inc. purchased Fazoli's for $130 million, aiming to expand its footprint.

Under President Doug Bostick's leadership, Fazoli continues to adapt and thrive in a competitive market.
