CVS Confirms Peoria Heights Store Closure
Amy Thibault, a spokesperson for CVS, confirmed on Friday that the store will cease operations on July 30. This move is part of the broader trend of CVS reducing its store count nationwide.
Residents of Peoria Heights will need to seek alternatives as one of their local pharmacies closes this summer. News25 reports that Thibault described the closure decision as challenging for the company.
She noted that employees affected by the closure are offered similar positions elsewhere within CVS.
As CVS Pharmacy closes several of its locations, it ensures that customers affected by these closures still have access to their medications. Prescriptions from the closing stores are being transferred to the CVS location at 1200 West Main Street in Peoria.
Alternatively, customers can fill their prescriptions at any other pharmacy that suits them.
While CVS has not provided specific reasons for the closures of individual stores, spokesperson Amy Thibault has cited multiple factors that guide these decisions.
These include the dynamics of the local market, changes in population, the number of stores within the community, and the availability of other nearby CVS locations that can serve the community's needs.
According to a report by The U.S. Sun, CVS announced a strategic plan in 2021 to close 900 locations. As of 2024, 300 of these closures are yet to be completed. The company had initially planned to finalize these closures by April of this year.
The recent closures include a CVS store in Peoria Heights, Illinois, approximately 80 miles north of Springfield. This closure is part of a broader effort by CVS to optimize its service network across the United States.

Over the past five years, CVS has closed three of its pharmacies in Peoria. The most recent closure occurred at the Lindbergh Drive location at the end of 2022. Before that, the South Peoria store on Lincoln Avenue shut down in the summer of 2021, and another branch located on North Sterling Avenue in the Wardcliffe Shopping Center closed its doors in November 2019.
Despite these closures, five CVS locations remain operational in Peoria. These include the Campustown store at the corner of Main and University Streets, directly across from Bradley University.
Additional CVS pharmacies can be found inside Schnucks stores on North University and North Centerway Drive, within the Target at Glen Hollow Shopping Center, and at the Pear Tree Lane site at Tar Memorial Drive and Big Hollow Road.
Moreover, residents in Peoria could still avail their needs at CVS inside Target at Glen Hollow Shopping Center and another store on Pear Tree Lane, situated at the busy intersection of War Memorial Drive and Big Hollow Road.
These locations remain accessible for residents seeking pharmacy services in central Peoria, as posted on The U.S Sun.
CVS Pharmacy is closing several locations across the U.S., including recent shutdowns in Michigan, New York, and Missouri. The closures are part of the company's ongoing strategy to streamline operations.
