In a couple of weeks, Martin, South Dakota, will see the arrival of a new hardware store. Jay and Janell Yohner are the brains behind Pioneer Building Supply, which will soon open on Main Street, taking over the former True Value location.
Hometown Pride Drives Local Entrepreneur
Jay Yohner, a native son of Martin, expressed his deep connection to the town when discussing the upcoming opening of Pioneer Building Supply.
"Martin is my hometown," Jay emphasized. "Another business had closed, and there was graffiti on the building. I couldn't stand to look at it."
The Yohners have been hard at work since purchasing the building in October. Jay mentioned ongoing efforts to add new signage and tackle exterior projects. "It's a little scary opening a store in this online age," Jay admitted. "There are a lot of unknowns, and it's a big investment."
Jay represents the third generation of his family, which is involved in Martin's building material and construction industry. Before returning home, he pursued a business degree from Black Hills State and studied Architectural Design and Drafting at Portland Community College.
"My dad and grandfather built quite a few of the homes in the area," Jay shared. "My grandfather owned the property where our store sits in the 70s."
Jay and his wife own Liberty Car Wash in Martin and oversee the U-Haul location. Jay emphasized their aim "to provide a service to the community and maintain the vitality of Main Street businesses."
He added, "We aspire for our friends and neighbors to access local shopping options and enjoy affordability."
