Customers are flocking to Wawa stores to take advantage of a special promotion. To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the well-known grocery chain offers free coffee, keeping its patrons caffeinated and eager to return.

Wawa Marks 60 Years with Celebrations and Giveaways

"I thought I had just gotten lucky," posted one Facebook user after receiving a free cup of coffee. However, this person was not alone. According to a press release from the retailer, Wawa plans to distribute nearly 1.5 million free cups of coffee at its over 1,000 stores on April 16.

The free coffee day is part of Wawa Day, an annual tradition that marks the store's 60th anniversary this year. Wawa is offering free hot coffee of any size to all customers throughout the day across all its locations.

To add a nostalgic touch, the coffee is served in vintage cups, celebrating the company's long history since its founding in 1803. Each store will feature 1960s-themed decorations to complement the anniversary celebration.

For those who might prefer something other than coffee, the stores also offer teas, juices, lemonade, and birthday cake donuts for just 60 cents on April 16.

Moreover, Wawa is giving away a special prize to one lucky customer who will be named a "Day Brightener" by the store team. This prize includes a sash, a mug, and a week's supply of coffee.

Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens expressed gratitude in a recent statement: "As we celebrate this significant 60th anniversary, we thank our customers and associates for the unforgettable connections that have driven our progress over the years. These relationships have helped us go beyond just filling orders to enriching lives every day."

Free coffee is just one way Wawa celebrates its six decades in the retail business. The convenience store chain also offers special promotions, pricing certain products at just 60 cents and using throwback décor and hoagie paper to evoke a sense of nostalgia.

In addition to marking 60 years in retail, Wawa commemorated the 10th anniversary of its Wawa Foundation during "Wawa Day," giving away $1 million in gift cards to its partner non-profits.

While Wawa has been a fixture in retail since the 1960s, its history as a privately held company stretches back even further. The chain serves over 684 million customers annually and brews more than 171 million cups of coffee annually.

Wawa Expands with 70 New Stores for Anniversary

Wawa is set to open 70 new stores to celebrate its 60th anniversary, expanding its presence beyond the over 1,000 locations in states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida. For the first time, the chain will enter Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina.

The company has been a community staple. Gheysens expressed pride in serving communities with quality and convenience, pledging continued commitment as the company grows.

Grand openings for the new stores will start at 7:45 am, with the first 100 customers possibly receiving a free "Wawa 60th Anniversary in Your Era" T-shirt.
