Macy's Nationwide Shutdown: Every Store to Close Doors on Easter Sunday

| By

Macy's, a popular department store, has announced it will close every one of its locations for a full day soon. This means shoppers won't be able to visit Target on that day either.

The company also said its main New York City store will be closed on Easter Sunday.

Macy's Closes Nationwide for Easter Observance

Macy's and many other stores have decided to close temporarily to mark the holiday. This year, Easter Sunday falls on March 31.

As reported by the data company Scrape Hero on March 12, 2024, there are 515 Macy's stores throughout the United States. These stores are spread across 46 states and territories, with California hosting the most at 89 locations.

Similarly, H-E-B, a grocery chain based in Texas, will also close all its American stores for the day. This decision leaves customers looking elsewhere for their last-minute Easter shopping. However, it allows employees to spend the day celebrating with loved ones.

H-E-B provides details on holiday hours, including curbside and home delivery services, on a special page on its website. This move by Macy's and H-E-B reflects a broader trend in the U.S., where many stores give their staff a break on Easter Sunday to enjoy the holiday.

Major Stores Closed for Easter Celebrations

As Easter approaches, several well-known stores across the country have decided to close their doors to give everyone the chance to celebrate the holiday. Among them, Publix, a leading grocery chain from Florida, has announced a one-day closure.

This move aligns with decisions by three key retail players: TJ Maxx, Marshall's, and HomeGoods, which, as reported by USA Today, will not open on Easter Sunday. Adding to the list, Target, Costco, Sam's Club, and Lowe's have all confirmed they'll take a break on the same day.

Aldi is another major retailer joining this trend, planning to shut all its U.S. stores on Easter Sunday. This gesture reflects a growing practice among retail chains to honor the holiday, providing a pause for customers and staff.

The closure list includes big names like Sam's Club, Costco, Target, Aldi, H-E-B, and Publix. Notably, Publix observes this closure tradition on three other major holidays: Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Thanksgiving.

On the day before and after Easter Sunday, Aldi stores will resume their regular schedule, ensuring customers have access to their shopping needs around the holiday.

However, not every store will be closed. Walmart is set to remain open, maintaining its regular hours for those last-minute holiday needs. Ikea and PetCo are among the few that will keep their doors open, operating under their usual hours.

Home Depot will welcome customers from 8 am to 6 pm for those needing home improvement supplies, as confirmed by USA Today. With holiday hours varying across different stores, checking with local outlets to confirm specific opening times is recommended.

This year, Easter falls on Sunday, March 31. It's a significant time for millions of Christians worldwide, marking the day Jesus Christ is believed to have risen from the dead. This follows Lent, 40 days of fasting and reflection.

The date of Easter changes every year. According to the History Channel, it's known as a "moveable feast" in the Christian calendar, which means the holiday doesn't have a fixed date like Christmas. Other moveable feasts include Ash Wednesday, which starts Lent, and Palm Sunday, the week before Easter.
