Lucky's Market, a grocery store owned by a family and already running two shops in Cleveland, is almost done building its new store in Columbus. This new store is set to open this spring in Victorian Village.
It's part of a big project to improve Thurber Village at the corner of Collins and Neil avenues. This project mixes different types of buildings and uses, and Lucky's Market will be a new addition to the neighborhood.
Lucky's Market: A New Family Legacy Store
The new Lucky's Market, spanning 21,000 square feet, will be managed by the Saltzman family. This family has been a part of the grocery scene since 1930 and took over the Lucky's Market in Clintonville, located at 2770 N. High St., back in 2020.
Aaron Saltzman, the vice president of Lucky's, shares his family's deep ties to the area. "We're now in the fifth generation of running our business. All of us live in Ohio, with many being proud alumni of Buckeye and former residents of Columbus," he said. The opening of the Victorian Village store marks another step in their mission to expand their locally owned and operated grocery stores throughout Ohio.
This new Lucky's Market location in Victorian Village will not just be another grocery store. It aims to offer a unique shopping experience with a farmers market-style selection of fresh produce, an in-house bakery, and a deli serving hot, made-to-order sandwiches and Boar's Head products.
The store will also feature Lucky's renowned bacon and sausage, ground right on the premises. Additionally, shoppers can look forward to an impressive range of beer, wine, seltzer, and ready-to-drink cocktails, with a special focus on Ohio and Midwest products.

Thurber Village Transformation: A New Chapter Begins
In October 2022, the transformation of Thurber Village took a significant step forward. This redevelopment effort includes the construction of a new 13,000-square-foot CVS pharmacy and a residential building with 225 apartments.
The development company Casto demolished an old Giant Eagle grocery store to make space for these updates.
Casto has been at the forefront of planning this transformation since buying the property in 2005 for $6.2 million, as reported by the Franklin County auditor's office. The company shared that it has worked hand in hand with local groups like the Harrison West Society and nearby residents for several years to design a redevelopment plan that meets the community's needs.
Eric Leibowitz, Casto's vice president of Development and Leasing, expressed excitement about the project's progress. "We've received numerous requests for a grocery store at this location, and we're excited to meet this community need. We're doing so with the help of the Saltzman family, who bring a wealth of experience and a track record of success," he said.
The Saltzman family, known for owning the Dave's Markets grocery chain in northeast Ohio, has been in the grocery business for generations, with three generations currently involved. Lucky's Market, founded in Boulder, Colorado, in 2003, had its Ohio locations taken over by the Saltzman family in April 2020, signaling a new era for the brand in the state.
