| By

In just a few days, Giant Food, a well-known grocery store chain, is closing one of its most famous stores. This store, located in Arlington, Virginia, has been a go-to place for shoppers for nearly 90 years.

Founded in 1936, Giant Food has been a household name, providing groceries and essentials to families for generations. The Arlington store, known for its long history and service to the community, is one of the oldest in the chain.

The closure of this iconic location marks a significant moment for Giant Food and its loyal customers in the area. The store has been a staple in the Arlington community, offering a wide range of products and a friendly shopping experience.

Giant Food's Lyon Village Store to Shut Down After Six Decades

Giant Food's store in Lyon Village Shopping Center, a familiar sight for over 60 years, is set to close permanently on February 29. This marks the end of an era for the local community that has relied on this store for their daily shopping needs.

Despite the closure, Giant Food assures its customers they will not be left without options. The company focuses on online services, including pick-up and delivery options, to continue serving the community.

Giant Food stated to ARLnow, "In our regular review of our business and the needs of our customers, we have found that we can still meet the demands of this community through our other nearby stores and online services like Giant Pickup and delivery."

The company emphasized its dedication to its customers, "Even though we are closing this location, our commitment to providing excellent service and meeting the needs of our shoppers remains our top priority."

As the Giant Food store in the Lyon Village Shopping Center prepares to close its doors forever on February 29, there's a silver lining for its employees. The company has confirmed that all staff members from this store are being offered jobs at other Giant locations. This move ensures job security for the team despite the store's closure.

Local Giant Food Closure Disappoints Shoppers

For loyal customers of this particular store, the nearest alternative is just about a mile away at the Virginia Square Giant Food store. This location will become the go-to spot for those who frequented the Lyon Village store.

However, the closure has left some customers feeling disappointed. One regular shopper expressed her dismay, saying that the news "sucks." She particularly appreciated the convenience of having other stores nearby, like the Italian Store, during her grocery trips.

This sentiment reflects the impact of the store's closure not just as a place to buy groceries but as a part of the larger shopping experience in the area. The change is a significant shift for the local community that has relied on this store for their shopping needs.

The Lyon Village Shopping Center, losing its Giant Food store at month's end, still boasts a variety of shops. The center houses The Italian Store, CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks, Big Wheel Bikes, and a BGR burger joint alongside the soon-to-be-gone grocery.

Despite the closure, Giant Food's presence remains strong, with 164 other locations. Last year, busy mother Erin Hatch Neal praised Giant Food's delivery service on a Facebook group, emphasizing its importance for her family, especially during the pandemic. Her appreciation reflects the value of community services like Giant Food's.
