A new restaurant in University City, known as Asad's Hot Chicken, had its grand opening on Friday, which drew such a large crowd that it overflowed onto city streets. According to police reports, the event was cut short due to public safety concerns.

The authorities at the scene informed CBS News Philadelphia that an estimated 500 to 600 people gathered at 16 South 40th Street for the debut of Asad's Hot Chicken.

As part of their grand opening festivities, Asad's Hot Chicken announced on their social media on Thursday that they would give away ten gift cards, each worth $200, starting at 3 p.m.

The situation escalated when police reported that the offer of free chicken led to the crowd becoming unruly, resulting in fights. To manage the problem, the restaurant reached out to the authorities, who arrived at the scene along with officers from the University of Pennsylvania.
