The REI store, a well-known destination for outdoor enthusiasts, officially shut down on Thursday, February 1, in Portland, Oregon. This closure follows the company's announcement in April 2023 of their decision to close this location.
REI Portland Store Closes Despite Security Efforts
The company decided to shut down its Portland store in April 2023, explaining that this location had experienced the most thefts and break-ins in its 20 years.
Even though Mayor Ted Wheeler and the Portland Police Bureau took steps to improve security and tried to persuade the company to keep the store open, their efforts did not prevent the closure.
After maintaining a location in downtown Portland for over 20 years, the retailer announced that escalating crime rates were the main cause for shutting down its store.
The company stated, 'In recent years, our neighborhood in Portland has faced a surge in crime. Last year, our Portland store experienced the highest rate of break-ins and thefts in its 20-year history despite our efforts to enhance security.

Fans Mourn Closure of Beloved Portland REI Store
Loyal customers of the popular gear and adventure store are expressing their disappointment over its closure, with many turning to social media to share their sorrow.
A Facebook post by The Oregonian sparked a wave of reactions. One woman lamented, "Another good company, GONE! When will it end??" She also criticized local leadership, stating, "Kudos to the Mayor and other city leaders who refuse to see the problem! Get it together!"
While some comments delved into the city's political issues, others simply expressed sadness over the loss. "Oh no! One of our favorite stores..so sad," a shopper commented. Another added, "My favorite district...so sad."
Despite this closure, three other REI locations remain open in the Portland metro area, including Tualatin, Hillsboro, and Clackamas stores.
REI communicated with its customers about the closure through an email last spring, also informing them about the existing nearby stores.
The company revealed, "Since that time, we announced a new store in Beaverton, Oregon, that will open in spring 2024," highlighting their ongoing commitment to the region.
Aidan Elmore, who recently relocated to Portland, expressed his disappointment with REI's closure, noting it as an affordable option for bike maintenance. "With a $ 30 lifetime membership, you get free tire changes after buying the tube. This reduces the cost significantly compared to local bike shops," Elmore explained.
However, he and Stacie Howard now face the challenge of finding a new service provider. Howard, an avid hiker, kayaker, and skier, frequented the downtown REI store about twice a month.
She views the closure as a significant loss for cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts who valued its central location.
Howard also commented on the broader challenges facing businesses, "Many have had to fortify their windows and hire more security to curb theft. The solution isn't clear."
Walter Weyler from the Downtown Neighborhood Association highlighted the broader issue affecting retailers. "It's a widespread problem, not just for REI but several other stores.
The current situation in our city is allowing more of this than is acceptable," he stated, emphasizing the need for a change in handling retail security and theft.
