At one of its stores, Aldi has introduced a major innovation transforming customers' shopping. The company has rolled out its first-ever fully automated self-checkout system in the United States.

This new system allows shoppers to complete their purchases without the need to scan items, simplifying and speeding up the checkout process.

Aldi's High-Tech Checkout Launches in Aurora, Illinois

In Aurora, Illinois, Aldi has unveiled cutting-edge shopping technology at their store located at 2275 Galena Blvd., approximately 40 miles west of Chicago. This advancement comes from a partnership between Aldi and the tech company Garbango.

The store has numerous cameras and sensors mounted on the ceiling, all based on advanced computer vision technology. These devices are designed to accurately identify the items customers place in their baskets, allowing for a seamless checkout experience where scanning becomes unnecessary.

Aldi has started offering an automated checkout service at their Aurora, Illinois store since November, as confirmed by a Grabango representative. This store, located at 2275 Galena Blvd., was visited earlier this week by a journalist from Payments Dive, a sister publication. Notably, this Aldi store is roughly 10 miles from Batavia, Illinois, where Aldi's U.S. headquarters is situated.

The Aurora store, established in 2017 as reported by local media, now features numerous signs inside and outside, inviting shoppers to experience the new "Aldi Go" system. These signs highlight that the technology is "Powered by Grabango," emphasizing the collaboration behind this innovative checkout solution.

The new checkout-free system at Aldi uses a combination of cameras, sensors, and a mobile app to monitor what customers pick up as they shop. This innovative approach means shoppers no longer need to scan their items manually before exiting the store.

Opened in 2017, the Aldi store has been equipped with signs inside and outside, encouraging customers to try their new "Aldi Go" system. These signs prominently display that the system is powered by Grabango technology.

To access this service, customers must download the Grabango mobile app and link a credit card to pay for their purchases. The system accepts all major credit cards and supports Apple Pay, with plans to introduce Google Pay soon, as mentioned by a Grabango representative.

Additionally, the app features a special button that allows shoppers to seek approval from store staff for buying age-restricted items like alcohol. It also has a function for customers to weigh certain produce items.

Aldi, known for being the pioneer in discount grocery shopping, has seen an extraordinary journey since its humble beginnings in post-war Germany. The Albrecht brothers, Karl and Theo, took over their mother's grocery store in 1948 and rapidly expanded their venture.

By 1955, they had opened more than 100 stores. Aldi now boasts a massive global presence with over 10,000 stores worldwide.

Since opening its first store in the United States in 1976, Aldi has quickly grown to operate 2,300 stores, becoming one of the nation's fastest-growing grocery chains.

The retailer's expansion is set to accelerate even more. In 2023, Aldi opened 120 new stores and is now poised to grow further by acquiring Southeastern Grocers, expected to be completed early this year.
