Walmart has permanently closed a store that served the community for 20 years. This closure, previously hinted at by the company's CEO, marks the end of an era for this Walmart store. However, the building won't stay empty for long.
The site, which once housed a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Overland Park, Kansas, is set to undergo a significant transformation. By late March, it will reopen as a new international grocery store, introducing a diverse range of global products to the area.
This change reflects a move towards more varied retail options in the region following the closure of the longstanding Walmart location.

Major Walmart Locations: CEO Predicts Store Closures
In a notable development impacting major Walmart locations, the recent closure of one of its stores follows a prediction by Walmart CEO Doug McMillon in 2022. McMillon had forewarned that several stores might face shutdowns shortly.
During an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box in 2022, the CEO identified theft as a significant factor behind these potential closures. He remarked on the increasing theft rate, stating, "Theft is an issue.
It's higher than what it has historically been." This statement now seems to be a driving force behind the recent shutdowns of Walmart stores, including the long-standing location that just closed.
McMillon's earlier prediction of store closures and higher prices has partially come to fruition. While he initially cited theft as a potential cause, the recent wave of closures is not directly linked to this issue.
In a strategic move, Walmart announced plans to shut down 24 stores in various states nationwide by June.
As reported by Daily Mail, the closures are set to affect locations in Illinois, Oregon, Georgia, Florida, Washington, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia, Arkansas, and Hawaii. This decision aligns with McMillon's warning, reflecting a company's operational focus shift.
Among the closed stores is a notable Walmart in Kansas, which ceased operations in June 2023. According to The Kansas City Star, this store has been operational since 2003 and was identified as underperforming.
Its closure is also noteworthy due to its proximity to another Walmart Neighborhood Market, less than two miles away. Walmart Neighborhood Markets are generally smaller-scale versions of the full-sized stores, offering a more condensed selection of goods.
Overland Park Welcomes New International Grocery Store
Meanwhile, Overland Park is set to welcome a new international grocery store, moving into the space formerly occupied by a Walmart Neighborhood Market. Located at 10303 Metcalf Ave., this store promises to bring a unique shopping experience to the community.
The city of Overland Park recently approved the building permit for this venture, signaling the start of a new chapter for the locale. The store will offer typical grocery items and international products catering to diverse culinary tastes.
Shoppers can look forward to exploring different store sections, each dedicated to a specific world region. This setup aims to provide fresh, authentic products from various global cultures. The store's name and design renderings are still in the works, as Ben Hassine of Carthage Real Estate Group mentioned. However, the grand opening is slated for late March.
This international grocery store is the latest project by Eddie Musallet, a Kansas City-based entrepreneur. Musallet is known for owning four El Mercado Fresco Hispanic grocery stores in Kansas City and Kansas City, highlighting his expertise in the grocery business. This new store represents an expansion of his venture into a more globally-focused retail offering.
