Matheson Trucking and its affiliates, including Matheson Flight Extenders (MFE) and Matheson Postal Services (MPS), based in Sacramento, are shutting down operations. This decision ends over sixty years of business by the prominent Postal Service contractor.

In the last five months, sources close to the matter have revealed to FreightWaves that the Matheson companies have let go of about 3,500 employees.

Matheson Trucking and Affiliates Shutting Down: A Trail of Bankruptcy and Lost Contracts

Under U.S. law, big companies must tell state and local officials if they lay off many workers. When asked, Matheson Trucking's office had no response.

Records reveal that Matheson Postal Services and Flight Extenders asked for bankruptcy protection in May 2022. Matheson Trucking did the same two months later. This type of bankruptcy usually helps companies rearrange their debts.

However, California's employment department filings show that Matheson Trucking and its related companies are stopping their operations. FreightWaves reports that Matheson lost necessary postal contracts, as mentioned in a letter sent to workers on November 30.

The letter from Matheson companies stated that they had grown a lot in the last five years, both in money earned and employees hired. But, due to recent changes and losing many contracts, they had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and make a tough decision to shut down.

FreightWaves reported that Matheson Flight Extenders had issues with the postal service about running two mail centers in Atlanta and Brandywine, Maryland. After spending $24 million on improving these centers in 2021, Matheson faced trouble getting paid back by the USPS, per FreightWaves.

The job cuts at Matheson Trucking affect a broad range of positions, from truck drivers and mechanics to secretaries, accountants, and even the CEO.

Some employees were let go in early December, while others were told they would lose their jobs on January 30th. Besides its main office in Sacramento, the Matheson group also operates from locations in Metro Air Park and on Bannon Street in Sacramento.
