Xbox One vs. PS4 Sales: 5 Million Units Sold

| By

Coming on the heels of Sony's announcement of PS4 sales, Microsoft said it sold 5 million Xbox One consoles. The gaming console was launched last November.

According to Fox Business, the sales figures put Microsoft on Sony's tail. The Play Station 4 has sold 7 million units since November, around the same time Xbox One was launched. Both devices have seen increasing sales a weak market for games.

"The new generation is off to a strong start, with global Xbox One sales outpacing Xbox 360 by more than 60 percent at the same point in time, a true testament to your love of console gaming," said Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of marketing, strategy and business at the Xbox division.

Xbox's rival, Sony, has seen better sales of its PS4. In fact, Reuters said Sony was having difficulty keeping up with the demand.

"Although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers," said Andrew House, president and group chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, according to NDTV.

NDTV also stated that PS4 sales in the first four months since its launch have been twice as much as PS3 sales over the same duration.

The higher sales of PS4 have been attributed to its price tag that is $100 lesser than Xbox One. To push its sales, Microsoft began offering a $450 bundle that included the console and Titanfall shooter game, according to NDTV. The Xbox One, which costs $499, also includes Microsoft Kinect motion sensing device.

Quoting NPD Group research, Fox Business reported that new console and PC games posted a 28 percent decline in sales last month.
