Foster Farms Salmoenlla Outbreak: 524 Sickened From Latest Chicken Purchases

| By

Over 500 people throughout 25 states have reportedly been victimized by the past year's Salmonella outbreak believed to have been purchased not long ago the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on their website.

The CDC reported Wednesday that 524 people were struck ill from Salmonella as of Wednesday.

Seven unusual cases of salmonella heidelberg are known as the cause although time has been spent to end its spread the CDC reported.

"Basically, what we're saying is the outbreak is not over," Dr. Rob Tauxe deputy director of foodborne, waterborne, and environmental diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told NBC News. "As the new cases have been reported, almost all of them report eating chicken and almost all say it's Foster Farms," Tauxe told NBC News.

The cases reportedly stem from natural body parts of a chicken, and none from a freezer. NBC News reported. An official recall has not been issue.

"To a degree, it's in the lap of the consumer when they're consuming chicken from anywhere," Tauxe told NBC News. "We're not living in a world where we can presume that chicken is not contaminated with something that can make us sick."

One hundred ninety-four of the people sickened or thirty-seven percent of the people have been admitted to the hospital, with zero deaths tallied.

Seventy-six percent, the majority of the people sickened by the outbreak have been in California the CDC reported.

Select Foster Farms chicken products were targeted as the cause of a Salmonella outbreak Oct. 8 that sickened 287 people in 18 states the company said in a press release.

Cases were linked to chicken products made at three California plants owned by Foster Farms. The affected products had the following numbers: P6137, P6137A or P7632.

Three Foster Farms chicken facilities in California were almost closed after officials detected abundant amounts of salmonella.
