Twitter introduced a redesign for profile pages that appears similar to Facebook.
The new design includes larger photos, a wide cover-image and lets users customize their profile pages with their favorite tweets, according to The Guardian.
"Moment by moment, your Twitter profile shows the world who you are," said Twitter designer David Bellona in a blog post. "Starting today, it will be even easier (and, we think, more fun) to express yourself through a new and improved web profile."
The redesign includes profile photos on the left corner of the page as well as a large banner photo, which looks like the big rectangular cover photos on Facebook pages, Fox News reported. Users can "pin" one of their tweets to the top of the page to let people know the kind of topics they like to tweet about. Tweets that get the most interest from other users will appear higher.
The design was made to be more visual in a move by Twitter to attract people who aren't fans of at-symbols, acronyms and hashtags. The company said it must reach a larger audience. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo talked about the company's effort during an earnings call with analysts in February.
"By bringing the content of Twitter forward and pushing the scaffolding of the language of Twitter to the background, we can increase high quality interactions and make it more likely that new or casual users will find the service as indispensable as our existing core users do," Costolo said.
Noah Elkin, executive editor at eMarketer, said that while Twitter still needs to grow, advertisers "love the engagement they get on Twitter," Fox News reported. Elkin added that it is important for Twitter to bring the new design to its mobile app.
The updates to profile pages are now available for a select group of current users, which includes a small list of celebrities, The Guardian reported. New Twitter users will be able to start with the new design when they sign up for an account.
Current users can expect the redesign in the next few weeks.
