Moving into the New Year, Apple has ranked as the top smartphone maker in U.S. for January 2014, according to a comScore report.
According to the report that was released on Friday, Apple's market share averaged over three months ending January 2014 stood at 41.6 percent, slightly better than its share compared to October 2013. Samsung, which ranked second, improved its tally from 25.4 % last October to 26.7% at the end of January this year. While LG also improved its market share, Motorola and HTC saw their market shares decline.

The comScore report also attested to Android's dominance in the mobile market. Though Apple was the top manufacturer, the share of iOS devices was found to be substantially lower than Android devices. Android captured 51.7% share of the market in January while Apple had a 41.6% share in the corresponding period. The report, however, pointed out that where Android lost a 0.5% in its share since October, Apple gained 1% from in the same period.
In more signs of trouble for Blackberry, the report pointed out that devices running the Blackberry OS platform had lost a 0.5% share in the market. The report added that Microsoft did not gain nor lose ground as its share in the OS market stood at 3.2%.
Besides breaking down the hardware and OS market percentages, the digital analytics firm also determined that Facebook was the most used mobile app in January, with 77.6% usage while Google Play came second reaching 52.4% mobile audience.
"159.8 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (66.8 percent mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in January, up 7 percent since October," the report observed.
