VW Recalls Nearly 600,000 Caddy Vans After Tailgate Flaw Discovered

| By

The German carmaker, Volkswagon, has recalled nearly 600,000 Caddy vans after the company discovered a flaw with the vans' rear doors.

The recall itself affects about 589,000 small delivery vans that were built between Nov. 2003 and Jan. 2013. This includes 284,000 that were made in Germany, according to a news release. The main issue is that these vans have a flaw that may cause an open tailgate to snap shut, and potentially cause harm to a person who doesn't move out of the way in time.

So what causes this particular issue? The company stated that the Caddy vehicles may be affected by a damaged pin that holds on the gas-pressure dampers that slow the closing of the rear hatch-type door. If this pin becomes detached, then the door can unexpectedly fall.

While the Caddy vehicles with the rear hatch-type door are affected, the Caddy vehicles with folding rear doors that are fixed to the sides aren't. Currently, VW has stated that the vehicle owners who are affected will be notified, according to Business Week.

The announcement comes just three months after Volkswagen had to recall over 2.6 million cars, according to Reuters. About a third of these cars were in China, and the recall came as a huge blow to the company that's trying to outmaneuver Toyota and General Motors when it comes to top place for world's biggest carmaker. This recall was due to various problems with the vehicles, including faults with headlights on the Tiguan and engine problems in the Amarok models, according to AFP.
