Samsung Introduces New Galaxy S5 Smartphone at Global World Congress

| By

Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled its new smartphone, the Galaxy S5, on Monday at a global tech show in Barcelona, Spain.

The smartphone includes a variety of features, such as a fingerprint sensor and a built-in heart rate monitor, according to CBS News.

The Galaxy S5 will be on sale on Apr. 11, and features a bigger screen, an improved camera, and supports faster download speeds than the Galaxy S4, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Galaxy S5's built-in sensor lets users unlock their phones with a fingerprint scan, CBS News reported. The sensor is also capable of protecting the users' passwords when they make PayPal payments.

An additional feature of the new phone is that it is water-resistant, according to CBS News. The screen is able to adapt to external changes and gives the users the option to dim the screen, which can be helpful in not disturbing people nearby.

While the Galaxy S5 displays a variety of additions and improvements, some of these improvements are little compared to the previous Galaxy S4. The new camera comes with 16 megapixels, as opposed to the S4's 13 megapixels. The Galaxy S5 is only slightly larger and heavier by one ounce, according to CNN Money. The sales of the Galaxy S4 were incredibly hyped, but the phone was not able to live up to the hype or the sales expectations.

Instead of trying to attract customers by making the new smartphone flashy, Samsung focused on improving its functional features, such as battery life, download speed, photo-taking and protection from water and dust, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Samsung executive Lee Younghee talked about the company focusing on what customers want with their new phone, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"People are easily excited about all this 'disruptive' and 'latest technology', and we are working on this too," Younghee said. "But our philosophy is to listen to consumers."
