Hyundai to Reveal Intrado Concept at Geneva Motor Show 2014

| By

Hyundai Motor Company is set to unveil the new Intrado crossover concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

Concept images of the new vehicle were leaked last Friday, according to Car and Driver Magazine.

The vehicle represents a new design philosophy that Hyundai has taken, according to AutoCarIndia. The philosophy includes the concept of minimalist simplicity and functionality, and how these ideas will be featured in all of Hyundai's cars.

The Intrado is built around a super-lightweight structure made from combining different materials, The Korean Car Blog reported. The vehicle features a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, which is lighter than the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell.

According to Motorward, the new fuel cell works more efficiently than the ix35 fuel cell, and gives the driver a range of 365 miles on one fuel tank of H2. Additional details of the system have not been released yet.

The Intrado Concept also features a super-light, super strong structure made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), Motorward reported. The structure is made up of 'hoops' that are put together with carbon fiber. Hyundai said the new structure will save weight by about 70 percent and is strong enough that the vehicle won't need a B-pillar.

The inspiration for the vehicles name, Intrado, comes from an aircraft's wing, The Korean Car Blog reported. The wing allows flight to occur by producing a lift. The aircraft also gives inspiration to Intrado's technological concepts, such as removing unnecessary weight, using advanced materials and the addition of the powertrain.

Design president Peter Schreyer discussed the purpose of the Intrado, AutoCarIndia reported. Schreyer said the car has been designed, "from the inside out: to put the driver at the centre of the driving experience; to be perfect in an ergonomic sense; and to provide a genuinely multi-purpose ownership experience- capable enough to suit an active lifestyle, small enough to park in the city, but comfortable and efficient over long distances."

Hyundai brand European design chief Thomas Burkle stated the Intrado's main focus is on attracting younger buyers with active lifestyles, AutoCarIndia reported. Burkle said younger buyers are interested in products that they can connect to functionality.

"These objects- whether they're mountain bikes, high-end consumer electronics or designer hand tools- represent the next generation of premium product," Burkle said.
