Rumors about the Galaxy S5 and Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch have been running rampant as the time nears for the Barcelona Mobile World Congress. Now, new information has emerged regarding the two devices, and could tell consumers what might be in store for them in the future.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will actually debut at the conference next week on Feb. 24, according to USA Today. The watch will reported feature a new HTML5 version of the Tizen operating system. Tizen is actually an open-source project that is trying to develop a software platform for smartphones and other connected devices. The move to the Tizen will actually mean that the smartwatch will be able to operate as a standalone device without having to be hooked up to a smartphone, according to The Inquirer.
"Samsung is trying to protect its own long-term interests, not fortifying Google's Android camp while building their own camp around Tizen," said Stuart Richens, vice president of digital media at Network Communications, in an interview with USA Today.
The smartwatch isn't the only thing that's likely to be unveiled at the conference, though. The Galaxy S5 is also likely to make an appearance.
According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S5 will feature a fingerprint sensor, something that would place it in the same realm as the iPhone. In addition, the phone is also likely to feature a larger 5.2-inch screen and a sharper display than the current Galaxy S4, according to SF Gate.
Yet there are some new rumors that have also been added when it comes to the new smartphone. Rumors announced via ZDNet Korea suggest that the Galaxy S5 will be both waterproof and dustproof, according to CNet. Anyone who has ever dropped their phone in a toilet or swimming pool will probably appreciate this possible new feature, which is an upgrade from the current Galaxy S4.
