Over 2,500 new full-time employees at Amazon will assist the online retailer at its various distribution facilities across the United States USA Today reported Wednesday.
"Today, we're excited to announce 2,500 full-time jobs, bringing new employment opportunities to local communities across the country," said Mike Roth, vice president of North America operations, in a company statement.
Positions will be available in Chester, Va., Petersburg, Va. Coffeyville, Kan, Columbia, S.C., Dupont, Wash, and Murfreesboro, Tenn., USA Today reported.
Over 20,000 individuals were employed at Amazon fulfillment centers in 2013. Over 50 percent began as seasonal employees USA Today reported.
One hundred seventeen thousand, three hundred full-time and part-time employees worked for the online retailer last year as well. Employees at the centers make more than workers at regular retailers USA Today reported.
Amazon joins Home Depot as another retailer making hires. Home Depot announced it was hiring 80,000 seasonal workers to help with the retailer's annual spring season.
Amazon has made other moves on the distribution front with the addition of Sunday delivery Nov. 17 The Wall Street Journal reported.
Current service goes around Los Angeles, and New York. Deliveries in Dallas, New Orleans Houston, and Phoenix are expected in 2014
Amazon will transport the packages to postal service locations Saturday evening or Sunday morning in order to deliver them to people's homes if they are available The Journal reported. These also include small distribution centers in Procter and Gamble plants where items originate when sent to customers.
Amazon also has a grocery service in Los Angeles, and Seattle where people can get their groceries delivered to them on the day they place their order The Journal reported. The service offers 100,000 items other than food to complement the edible items they do buy such as frozen waffles, and tomatoes.
Amazon shares decreased 3.6-percent Wednesday to $348.85 USA Today reported.
