Target Cautions About Fake E-mails Amid 'Data Breach'

Target is amid a recent security hack on the company Fox News reported Tuesday.

"(The company is aware of)limited instances (of scam emails)," Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder told Fox News Tuesday. "(The company doesn't have any other specifics to provide about the fake emails.)

Target gave a 10 percent discount to the customers affected by the hack Monday ABC News reported.

Forty million credit and debit account numbers were taken from Target customers between Nov. 27, and Dec. 15, and are now reportedly being used on new plastics Krebs On Security reported.

The incident spanned the country in Target stores, and not online, and could have involved thieves fiddling with the machines customers utilize to slide their cards through while purchasing merchandise Bloomberg Businessweek reported.

An update from Target Friday said no pin information is believed to be obtained according to CNN Money. The security code on the cards plastic sticker near the card owner's signature on the underside of the card are also considered to be safe. The same is true for card user's social dates of birth, and social security number.

"As you have likely heard by now, Target experienced unauthorized access to payment card data from U.S. Target stores," Greg Steinhafel chairman, president, and CEO at Target said in a letter on his company's website when the incidents were discovered Friday. "We take this crime seriously. It was a crime against Target, our team members and most importantly you - our valued guest.

"We understand that a situation like this creates stress and anxiety about the safety of your payment card data at Target. Our brand has been built on a 50-year foundation of trust with our guests, and we want to assure you that the cause of this issue has been addressed and you can shop with confidence at Target," Steinhafel said in the letter.

According to The Boston Globe, all e-mails from the company's corporate communications will be published on its website.
