Retailers Accommodate Last-Minute Holiday Shoppers With Extra Hours

In order to accommodate last-minute shoppers for the holidays, many retailers are extending their hours to adjust for the influx.

Toy's R Us for one will open at 6 a.m. Saturday, and close at 9 p.m. in an event dubbed Super Saturday The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

Customers will be able to match prices, an updated inventory, and price reductions on popular items including the Furby Boom Toy.

According to The Times, The Toys R US in New York City's Times Square has operated since 8 a.m. Dec. 1, and will not close for a break until 10 p.m. Dec. 24.

"There are a lot of nervous retailers right now," Bill Martin, founder of ShopperTrak told The Times. "It's a fingers-crossed situation."

"This is a unique holiday season," Greg Greeley, vice president of Amazon Prime told The Times. "With so few shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, this weekend can be hectic for many holiday shoppers - fighting crowds while struggling to find just the right gift."

Kohl's is in the mix for the first time beginning 6 a.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Christmas Eve. Customers will be able to get gift boxes at no charge, and select from a variety of different products listed in computerized kiosks throughout the store.

Kmart will open up from 6 a.m. to 10- p.m. Dec. 24, an extra six hours than last year, but less than those of its competitors.

Customers can go into Target from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. based on each individual's stores hours.

Sears has scaled back its hours of operation from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"there remains a bit of sluggishness in holiday sales, and promotional activity has been stepped up over the last week," Michael Niemira, chief economist with The International Council of Shopping Centers told The Times. "(Consumers) are down to the wire.
