Johnny Depp is known to be a character actor and one of his most iconic roles is Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" film franchise.
Many people think he is the perfect person to play that character, but the Hollywood heartthrob recently revealed that he almost didn't get the role.
During a panel interview at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles, the 52-year-old actor admitted that Disney wasn't always convinced that he is the right actor to portray the swashbuckler.
"Yeah, they wanted to fire me," Depp said as reported by E! Online.
"It trickled back to me that [former Disney CEO] Michael Eisner went on some sort of bent about how 'Goddamnit Johnny Depp's ruining the film! Is it drunk? Is it gay?' So I fully expected to be fired," he shared.
The star of "Black Mass" was also asked by another executive, "What the f--k are you doing?" but he didn't take it seriously.
"I said, 'Well don't you know all my characters are gay?' Johnny Depp jokingly said. "I really expected to be fired, but I wasn't for some reason. They were actually gonna put subtitles under my character, they couldn't understand Captain Jack," he added.
Thankfully, Disney took a chance on him and fans of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise couldn't see the film continue without Depp as Jack Sparrow.
The actor is now slated to appear in the fifth installment which is scheduled for release on July 17, 2017.
During an interview with IGN several years ago, Amber Heard's husband revealed his inspiration for portraying the character.
"I sort of thought that pirates would be the rock and roll stars of the 18th century, you know? Then, when you think of rock and roll stars, the greatest rock and roll star of all time, the coolest rock and roll star of all time, in my opinion, is Keith Richards. Hands down," he said.
The star of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" also drew inspiration from a popular Looney Tunes character.
"What I loved about Pepe Le Pew was this guy who was absolutely convinced that he's a great ladies man. And he's a skunk," Johnny Depp said. "This guy sees only what he wants to see. He'd just always make it through."
