Verizon Exploring the Sale its Enterprise Business, Looks to Focus on Core Business

| By

Verizon Communications Inc. is looking to sell its enterprise business, which could be worth as much as $10 billion, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The largest wireless carrier in the U.S. is looking to focus more on its core business.

Reuters adds that Verizon's enterprise business has struggled to keep up with the advancements in cloud computing.

The business is also facing stiff competition from Alphabet Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.

Some of the people, which asked not to be identified as the matter is confidential, told Reuters that it will not be easy though, to sell its enterprise assets as potential buyers would likely have to sign commercial agreements with Verizon.

The people added that no deal is certain as the company is still considering how best to structure the sale of some of the assets.

The people also told Reuters that the sale would include the business that is formerly known as MCI, a business that provides landline and Internet services for large business customers.

Terremark, Verizon's data center unit, will also be included in the sale.

Computer World adds that Verizon's enterprise business is rooted on MCI, which Verizon acquired in 2006.

MCI operates a global network and offers services in more than 140 countries. Verizon also said that 99 percent of Fortune 500 companies are customers of its MCI business.

Some of the people told Reuters that earlier this year, CenturyLink Inc., a wireline provider, was in talks with Verizon to acquire some of the assets.

Both companies though weren't able to agree on the terms.

Computer World adds that Verizon has been shifting its focus lately to mobile services and connected devices on the Internet of Things.

The company said in February that it would be selling its consumer wireless operations in California, Florida and Texas to Frontier Communications for $10.5 billion.
