Volkswagen is pulling back 2.6 million vehicles in the United States and China because of various issues the Business Standard reported Thursday.
"We sincerely apologize to our customers for any inconvenience caused," Volkswagen said in a statement the Standard reported.
The recall includes 800,000 of the company's compact Tiguan sports-utility vehicle because of flawed light fuses, and 2-liter Amarok pickup truck since fuel can spill from the engine.
621,563 vehicles made domestically, and another 18,746 cars made or brought in between January 2009 and June 2013 The Wall Street Journal reported. These include Audis, and Beetles to put new oil in their transmissions which can lead to electrical issues. Safety problems, and failure to work properly can also result.
Volkswagen's recall is the company's latest development since it recalled 3,594 of its 2013 and 2014 S6 and S7 Audi models last month, also because of fuel spills.
"After thorough investigation and analysis, it was determined that, due to manufacturing tolerance issues, a fuel line in (the) affected vehicles could become damaged over time," Chris Sandvig, General Manager of Compliance at Volkswagen said in letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the time.
Volkswagen will let drivers know if their vehicle is part of the affected models. The company is also offering to put in a new fuel line at no cost to owners.
"Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the affected fuel line in the affected vehicles for customers free of charge," Sandvig said in the letter to the administration.
Three-hundred and eighty four thousand cars were also pulled back in China in March due to gearbox issues.
Volkswagen sold 2.81 million cars in China last year. This is an increase from 25-percent the year before. The company's operating profit also increased 42 - percent during the same time period.
