Chrysler is pulling back 1.2 million trucks because there steering system tie rods can go off their track The Detroit News reported Saturday.
The recall also involves 1,136,400 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks manufactured from 2003 and 2012. The pull back also includes 43,500 Ram 4500 and 5500 4x4 chassis cabs manufactured from 2008 and 2012.
"(We are) casting a wider net than necessary," to be on the safe side," the company said in a statement The Detroit News reported. "Any (vehicles) found to have suspect tie-rod assemblies will have those components replaced at no cost to customers," Chrysler said in a statement The News reported.
Seven hundred and twenty six thousand vehicles will not have to be brought in will not have to bring in their vehicles for service the majority of which are not expected to require service.
Nine hundred and sixty eight thousand vehicles affected are in the United States, with another 157,000 in Canada.
The company is offering temporary service for drivers who have the affected 4500 and 5500 model trucks, while they wait for parts to become available in January. Service will include drivers having their vehicle inspected, and get their steering system re-aligned, or part replaced free of charge.
The company will also speed up the process for consumers so they are ready for the parts arrival, which may come late next year depending on their availability, by informing owners of the affected vehicles about how to schedule service appointments for early next year.
According to The News, six accidents have occurred as a result of the issue which can cause drivers to lose control of their trucks. Two injuries have also been reported with the 2500 and 3500 made from 2500 to 3500. Another accident with no reported injuries with the other models have also been one additional accident with no injuries involving the remaining models.
