Axe Body Spray: Eight Students Sent to Hospital After Falling Ill From Product's Odor

Eight students were sent to the hospital, and a school temporarily shut down following their contact to what was first believed to be a more toxic odor, but was later Axe Body Spray The New York Daily News reported Thursday.

"Axe was released in a sixth grade classroom yesterday," the New York City department of education said in a statement smokinggun.com reported. "EMS transported eight students to the hospital, and parents of two students took them to their own doctors. One student declined medical attention. The school is looking into the incident. Disciplinary action is pending."

The incident was carried out by a student around 1 p.m. on Wednesday in a sixth grade classroom at the Medgar Evers College Preparatory School located on Carroll St., in Crown Heights Brooklyn, N.Y. No one was severely hurt in the incident.

Axe Body Spray markets a message that it lure's men to women.

"Your new and improved male musk is released into the atmosphere, quickly reaching nearby females," the company says on its website. "This purported "Axe Effect" triggers "increased attention" from "eager, and attractive female pursuers."

One high school in Pennsylvania, and another in Connecticut have also had incidences with spray.

According to the Associated Press, Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pa instructed students to not use the product while going to school after a student was sent to the hospital when they came into contact with it in March.

The fire alarm sounded when a student overused the product in a locker room at Middletown High School in Middletown, Conn, last May The Middletown Press reported. The spray formed a billow under a heat sensor causing the alarm to blare.

"(The safety and well-being of users) is always our first priority" (and consumers with concerns should call the toll-free number on the back of the package," Axe said in a statement The Associated Press reported.
