McDonald's is trying out a new dollar menu.
According to USA Today, the burger chain plans to sell items for $1, $2, and $5 on its "Dollar Menu and More" admist pressure to boost sales, and lure customers to spend more. The menu would include shareable items like 20 piece boxes of McNuggets.
Neil Golden, McDonald's chief marketing officer, told USA Today the company could change the dollar menu later this year.
"While no official changes have been made to our current Dollar Menu, we continue to evaluate and test the best value options," Golden said.
Besides McNuggets, the menu includes single burgers, double patty burgers, deluxe burgers, and additional chicken options. McDonalds is just one of the many restaurants in the fast food industry thinking of ways to increase business.
Wendy's for instance adjusted its bargain menu and changed it to Right Price Right Size USA Today reported. The menu now has six items at 99 cents each. Eight others are below $2. The chain's current promotion includes a monterey ranch crispy chicken sandwich for 99 cents. Company sales have also been helped by its pretzel bacon cheeseburger.
ITG restaurant analyst Steve West told USA Today the changes McDonald's is making involve many aspects.
"That has a lot to do with the price-pressured consumer, but also about lack of innovation at McDonald's. You just don't see McDonald's innovating," he said.
The company has tested the new dollar menu in Fresno, Albuquerque, Columbia, S.C., Hartford, Conn, Springfield, Mass, and Memphis.
McDonald's established its original dollar menu over 10 years ago.
"As our customers and needs of the business have evolved, so has our dollar menu," Golden told USA Today.
