Walgreens Opens Up In-Store Clinics; Provides Health-Care Products For Older Population

| By

Aside from pharmaceuticals and other personal care supplies, Walgreens now offers in-store clinics health care products that are more in line with the older population according to the Associated Press.

Walgreens divisional vice president Beth Stiller told the AP that busy customers are now looking to cross more tasks off their to do lists when they visit the pharmacy other than simply doing prescription order.

"We live in a world where personalization and ... high-touch service is much more expected," Helena Foulkes, chief health care strategy and marketing officer at CVS Caremark Corp. told the AP.

In addition to a pharmacy, participating Walgreens have health clinics with nurse practictioners, cafes with barista-prepared coffee and eyebrow bars equipped with trained professionals to take care of facial hair.

The change is the latest switch from expanding locations to offering a vast selection of services and products pharmacy chains have made over the past five years according to the AP.

The new features stem off of Congress' passing of the "health care overhaul" in 2010, which allowed for the clinics to be installed so people under the legislation would be well-served.

Pharmacists in some states could then give flu shots, which then led to stores providing other shots for other diseases such as pneumonia and shingles. Twenty-five million people are expected to receive care and insurance under the new healthcare law the article said.

Grocers and other large stores have hopped on board and began offering similar services.

Walgreens has 11 stores throughout the United States where the barista-prepared coffee, juice, and smoothie bars, and boutiques offering eyebrow grooming and advisers with knowledge about beauty products can be found.

The stores are commonly in popular locations such as New York's Empire State building, and are twice the size of an average store totalling 14,000 square feet.
