News Corp has announced that there are changes in the leadership of News UK, the company's unit in U.K., with Rebekah Brooks returning as News UK's CEO, according to a press release issued by News Corp.
Aside from Brooks, News Corp also promoted David Dinsmore to chief operating officer and Tony Gallagher as the editor-in-chief of The Sun, Britain's largest-selling daily newspaper.
News Corp said in the press release that Brooks, who is returning to the post she held four years ago, will have added responsibilities.
She will be adding the acquisition and development of digital properties to her responsibilities.
The Wall Street Journal adds that Brooks, who is a protégée of Rupert Murdoch, stood down as CEO of News UK in 2011 following a crisis in the company.
She was the central figure of the phone-hacking scandal at the British tabloid News of the World.
The Wall Street Journal adds that Brooks was the editor of the now-defunct tabloid from 2000 to 2003 when the phone-hacking scandal alleged to have begun.
She was acquitted of all charges in the summer of 2014.
Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corp, said in the press release that Brooks' expertise, excellence and leadership will be crucial to the company.
"Rebekah will lead a great team at News UK into the digital future, while maximising the influence and reach of our newspapers, which remain the most informative and successful in Britain and beyond," he said.
Brooks said in the press release that she is happy to be back at News UK and is confident about the company moving forward.
"I am confident that we can meet the many challenges of this digital age with a combination of cutting-edge technologies and world-class journalism," she said.
Brooks will be replacing Mike Darcey, who is leaving News UK after being its CEO for three years, according to the press release.
The changes will take effect on September 7, 2015, for Brooks and in the coming weeks for Dinsmore and Gallagher.
