Uzbekistan Airways to Conduct Preflight Weighing of Passengers, Ensuring Flight Safety

| By

Uzbekistan Airways has just announced that they will now be conducting weighing of passengers prior to boarding the flight, according to a press release issued by Uzbekistan Airways.

The procedure will be carried out to ensure the safety of flights.

The procedure follows the rules of the International Air Transport Association, where "airlines are obliged to carry out the regular procedures of preflight control passengers weighing with hand baggage to observe the requirements for ensuring flight safety," the airline said in the press release.

Passengers will be asked to step on a scale after their carry-on luggage were weighed prior to boarding to determine the average weight of passengers with carry-on luggage.

The airline is guaranteeing the full confidentiality of the results as the weighing record will only be categorized according to gender or age, if the passenger is a child, according to the press release.

However, CNN added that the International Air Transport Association is not aware of such regulation.

"We are not aware of an IATA rule concerning the weighing of passengers and their hand luggage prior to flight," Chris Goater, manager of IATA corporate communications, told CNN via email.

He added that airlines have their own way of doing their calculations.

"All airlines have policies in place for load calculations, weight and balance of their aircraft," he said. "These policies in turn are subject to the rules and regulations of their national aviation regulator."

Fox News added that the new procedure won't be causing extra charges to overweight passengers.

It is unclear, though if overweight passengers can be prevented from boarding the flight.

Uzbekistan isn't the first airline to announce the procedure of weighing passengers before boarding a flight.

Fox News added that in 2013, Samoa Air announced plans to charge passengers based on what they weigh.

Uzbekistan Airways will appreciate the cooperation of the passengers in helping the solution for the airline's common task of flight safety, the company said in the press release.
