Hurricane Sandy 2012 will affect as many as 60 million people that live in the East Coast and has already caused evacuations, subway and school shutdowns, the New York Stock Exchange to come to a halt and businesses to close.

Sandy has already been blamed for 69 deaths in the Caribbean before it began traveling northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard. The National Hurricane Center said early Monday the storm has intensified, with top sustained winds of 90 mph and higher gusts.

Forecasters warned that the New York City region could face the worst of the hurricane. As of midday Monday, the storm was centered about 260 miles south-southeast of New York City, moving to the north at 18 mph with hurricane-force winds extending an incredible 175 miles from its center. The National Hurricane Center said early Monday the storm has intensified, with top sustained winds of 90 mph and higher gusts.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Sunday ordered the evacuation of 375,000 people from low-lying areas in New York City. Residents of the city's "Zone A" area are ordered to leave by 7 p.m. Sunday.

The NYSE and the Nasdaq has stopped operating and hope to reopen Wednesday. It is the first time in more than a century that weather stopped activity on Wall Street for more than 24 hours. A blizzard in 1885 forced exchanges closed for two days. And more recently, the NYSE opened the day after Tropical Storm Irene's Sunday arrival last year.

Meanwhile, stores across the east coast are taking precautions and closing ahead of time. Home Depot offered extended hours over the weekend at its Northeast stores but by Monday had closed several locations in New Jersey and New York.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture stressed that food safety is critical as grocery stores close up shop and potential power outages and flooding threaten the quality of stored food.
