Campbell Soup Co. announced on Tuesday that it will acquire Garden Fresh Gourmet for $231 million as part of its strategy for diversifying products.
"The acquisition of Garden Fresh Gourmet is another milestone in reshaping our portfolio toward faster-growing categories, including packaged fresh and organic foods," said Campbell Chief Executive Officer Denise Morrison in a statement, according to USA Today.
Garden Fresh Gourmet is expected to be rebranded as the Campbell Fresh division and will include healthier products like carrots and fruit juices. The new division will also produce hummus and tortilla chips.
Campbell, like many other major canned food companies, are continuing to venture into natural products targeted for younger, more health-conscious consumers. In recent years, the company has acquired many non-soup companies, such as Bolthouse Farms and Plum.
"Garden Fresh Gourmet will allow the Campbell Fresh division to expand in the deli section of the grocery store perimeter," Campbell Fresh President Jeff Dunn said in a statement, according to the site.
Campbell was founded in 1869 in Camden, New Jersey.
