Google Postpones Oct. 29 Android Event Due to Hurricane Sandy

| By

Google has postponed their Monday event due to the Hurricane Sandy until further notice, the company said in emails sent out to reporters.

"We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy," a note from Google's Android team explains, according to CNet. "We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more. Stay safe and dry."

As Hurricane Sandy is gaining momentum, Google faced mounting questions over whether it would continue with the event as planned. The waterfront pier where the event had been scheduled is now in an evacuation zone. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency on Friday.

Monday's event was originally scheduled for 10 a.m. ET. The announcement will be Google's biggest Nexus showing, with the company expected to show off its high-end tablet, the Nexus 10, from Samsung Electronics; LG Electronics's first Nexus phone, the Nexus 4; and an updated version of the Nexus 7 tablet that first debuted in July. It was also expected to show off Android 4.2.

There have been several leaks online of the expected upcoming products from Google, including photos taken with a Nexus 10 and posted on the Google+ page of a Google exec. Google Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra, vacationing somewhere that makes this writer jealous, uploaded a couple beach photos to his profile. Clicking on "image details" shows the photo was taken with a Nexus 10 and has a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels.
