Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti Unveils New Environmental Initiatives Affecting Local Businesses

| By

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced plans on Wednesday outlining new environmental programs and regulations that will affect a number of local businesses.

The report, an 105-page booklet entitled "the pLAn," introduces a vision for increased sustainability and environmental accountability, the Los Angeles Times reports. Private sector leaders will be encouraged to push forth initiatives such as increased monitoring of pollution and the utilization of solar-powered devices.

"It is very difficult for us to start to rank them, because I think also so much of it is how they tie together," Garcetti said, according to the site.

"There's no doubt that drought and our relationship with water is probably the most urgent of the needs, but can I really say that's more urgent than global warming? One is related to the other."

One of the central plans of the report includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent, with 2035 serving as the year this goal will be achieved by. Transportation companies operating in Los Angeles are said to be most affected: the installation of 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations and regulations on types of vehicles used on the road will be implemented.

Water companies are also said to be affected, as Garcetti mentions that curbing water imports is also included as a goal for the program.

"If we don't take the step to set targets, and measure progress to achieve those targets, how will we send the signals to the private sector, to the universities, that this is important as a community to come together?" said Matt Petersen, Garcetti's chief sustainability officer, the Los Angeles Times also reports.

Last November, the Los Angeles Department of City Planning released its "Plan for a Healthy Los Angeles" report, which is available online here.
