Harley-Davidson has announced a recall affecting approximately 41,000 motorcycles due to a potential short-circuiting issue that may lead to the loss of electrical and drive power.

The recall is a significant safety concern, as the problem could arise unexpectedly while the motorcycles are being operated, increasing the risk of accidents.

The affected models include:

  • 2024 FLHX
  • 2024 FLHXSE
  • 2024 FLTRX
  • 2024 FLTRXSE
  • 2024 FLTRXSTSE

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall is necessary because the voltage regulator wire in these models may come into contact with other components located near the motorcycle's engine.

This contact can lead to damage, exposing the wire and increasing the chances of short circuits. If a short circuit occurs, the rider may experience a sudden loss of power, which can happen without any prior warning. This unexpected failure can significantly heighten the risk of crashes.

While Harley-Davidson has not reported any specific incidents of crashes or injuries related to this issue, it has acknowledged receiving nine field reports that indicate potential problems. The company emphasizes the importance of addressing this safety concern promptly.

Customers Encouraged to Visit Harley-Davidson Dealerships

Motorcycle owners affected by the recall are urged to visit their local Harley-Davidson dealerships. At these locations, trained technicians will inspect the voltage regulator output wire and perform any necessary repairs at no cost to the owner.

Additionally, technicians will install a secondary retention strap to further secure the wire and prevent future issues.

For any questions or additional information, motorcycle owners can contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. This recall has been assigned the number 0186, which can be useful for owners when discussing their motorcycles with customer service representatives, said USA Today.

If you own a motorcycle and want to verify if it is part of the recall, you can check the NHTSA website. The NHTSA provides a recall check tool where you can enter your motorcycle's details to find out if it has been recalled.
