| By

Students across the Midlands are being invited to take part in the Subway "Fresh Start Challenge," which continues through Oct. 1.

As almost one-third of children in the United States are overweight or obese, more restaurants and franchises are trying to get involved in campaigns that promote exercise and healthy eating among children. Subway restaurants have rolled out their "Fresh Start Challenge" as part of a nationwide collaborative between the company and schools to stem the rise in obesity among young children and encourage healthy eating and exercise habits at a young age.

As part of the challenge, the youngsters can pick up a log from their local Subway store and keep a record of the number of fresh fruits and vegetables they consume, how much water they drink and how much they exercise during a three-week period.

Public, private and home-schooled students ages 5 to 14 can participate in the program with their parents permission.

The Subway Fresh Start Challenge is only available in the following Counties: Asheville, NC, Augusta, GA, Charleston, SC, Charlotte, NC, Columbia, SC, Florence-Myrtle Beach, SC, Greenville, SC. Click here for the entry forms and regulations.

Each student who mails in the completed entry form by Oct. 1 will receive a coupon for a free Subway Fresh Fit kid's meal or six-inch sub sandwich. They will also be eligible for a drawing for a chance to win a Subway party for their classroom and $1,000 for their school for fitness education.

Subway restaurants has partnered with the Jared Foundation and its premier program called Catch (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) for guidance and tips to help students track their daily progress toward a healthier life.

"Catch programs are already in many local schools and we are excited to support building healthy children, families and communities," said national Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle in a statement. "Through the Fresh Start Challenge, we want students to start the year off right with a focus on good health and nutrition habits. We also encourage them to make it fun by getting their family and classmates involved."
