Vermont-based coffee brewing manufacturer Keurig has announced that it is recalling over 7 million single-serve machines in the United States and Canada. Many customers have been complaining about spewing liquids resulting in burn injuries.
"Any reports of injury received were handled promptly," Suzanne DuLong, Vice President of Corporate Communications for Keurig said, according to USA Today.
"Important to note, is that any reported injuries of this issue were generally minor and we've received a very small number relative to the total number of units in the U.S. and Canada."
Approximately 6.6 million machines are being recalled in the United States with the rest coming from Canada. It is estimated that 90 reports of burn injuries caused by the Mini Plus machines were filed.
As a preemptive measure, the company has decided to retract the products in order to avoid future lawsuits and customer complaints. It has also issued warnings about proper use of the machine and the appropriate distance for maintaining and refilling its equipment.
Despite the safety precautions and preventative measures taken, the company's finances did not fare well from the incident: shares fell 2.2 percent on Tuesday afternoon, after the announcement was made, CBS News reports.
"We are working closely with our retail customers to recall all affected product and we are in the process of fulfilling MINI Plus Brewer orders for consumers and retail customers with a new product that is not affected by the recall," the company announced in a statement.
