London Olympics Dates: Committee Bans Sales of All French Fries Except McDonald's

The might of the McDonald's sponsorship with the London Olympic summer games is so big that the brand banned all other retailers in Olympic park from selling French Fries during the games that weren't of the McDonald's brand, reported the Daily Mail this week.

Heads of the Olympics announced that they banned all other retailers outside of McDonald's from selling fries due to "sponsorship obligations," the Mail noted in an article published Wednesday.

There is one loophole, however. The only way other retailers outside of McDonald's can sell fries - called chips in Britain - is to sell them with fish, as the famous British meal fish and chips, said the Olympic committee.

The memo from the Olympic committee read: "Due to sponsorship obligations with McDonalds, LOCOG have instructed the catering team they are no longer allowed to serve chips on their own anywhere within the Olympic park. The only loophole to this is if it is served with fish."

They continued, "Please understand this is not the decision of the staff serving up your meals, who given the choice would gladly give it you however they are not allowed to. This is being escalated through to the directors of L2012C and LOCOG and the IOC. Please do not give the staff grief; this will only lead to us removing fish and chips completely. Everyone has a right to work in a non-abusive environment."

The only brands allowed to be sold at Olympic park and throughout the games include Coca-Cola and its products, Cadbury sweets and chocolates, Nature Valley, and Heineken beers, listed the Daily Mail.

This is partly in ties with the new McDonald's store that opened in Olympic park, said the be the largest in the world, noted the Daily Mail, at over 3,000 square feet, and near the Olympic Stadium in London. The store is estimated to serve up to 1,200 customers at a time, and is two floors high.

The London Olympic summer games are set to begin on Friday, July 27.
