Glassdoor released the 2015 Best Places to Work in the U.S. and the U.K., with Google leading the pack for its emphasis on work-life balance.
Scott Dobroski, Glassdoor analyst, said the employees cited Google's effort in supporting families is the main reason for the high rating. As an example, the company has matched the paternity and adoptive parent leaves with maternity leaves.
“There’s a very noticeable theme, that Google employees in particular are talking about the company really stepping up in the past 12 months and making their lives easier in and out of work when it comes to how they work and function with their families,” said Dobroski.
The CEO said that most of the high-ranking companies are also noted for their importance on work-life balance.
Google edged out on the number one spot the management consulting firm Bain & Company. The California-based Internet giant is one of the five companies—Google, Bain & Company (#2), Chevron (#6), Qualcomm (#14) & Apple (#22)—that have been on the list for the past seven years Glassdoor conducted the research.
Other notable entries include In-N-Out, which ranked higher than Apple and Facebook. The fast food joint ranking number eight on the list didn't even make it to the top 50 the previous year. An employee who joined the study said that they attribute the high rating to the company's “great pay rates, fantastic hours, calm and comfortable atmosphere.”
Some companies slid down the list such as Facebook, from the fifth spot to the 23rd, and LinkedIn from third to 23rd. Twitter, which ranked second in the previous year, didn't make the cut.
More than 800,000 employees were surveyed for the study. Glassdoor asked the respondents specific questions such as the pros and cons of working with the company, whether it's worth recommending to friends, the specifics of the pay, benefits and growth opportunities, and their satisfaction with their job post.
Only companies with more than 1,000 employees were included in the ranking.
