Both Stop and Shop and Giant Foods chains announced a recall of the Pedigree weight management canned dog food products on Tuesday.
Giant Food of Landover, Md., and the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC, following a recall by Mars Petcare US, both announced via press releases issued on Tuesday, that they would remove the Pedigree weight management canned dog food products from shelves due to a possible choking hazard.
The particular brand in question is the Pedigree Healthy Weight Premium Ground Entree, 13.2 oz., UPC 2310034974, listed the press releases, and with "best before dates" listed between February 24, 2014 and March 23, 2014.
The products may contain small pieces of blue plastic that entered the food during the production process, noted the press releases, which several consumers had already reported they found while feeding their pets. Although on injuries or illnesses were recorded so far, as a result of consuming the tampered food product, Shop & Stop, Giant Foods, and Mars Petcare insists that those who have purchased the dog food product should discard any uneaten or unused portions, said the press releases, and bring their receipts to the supermarkets to get a full refund.
Giant Foods stores, of which there are 173 chains, can be found in the states and areas of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 22,000 people, said the Giants Food press release. Stop and Shop supermarkets employ around 62, 000 people in almost 400 stores located in the northeastern United States, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, new Jersey, and New York, said the Shop & Stop press release from Tuesday. Stop & Shop is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and EPA's Smart Way program, said the press release, and has been awarded the LEED certifications for 50 of its branches.
